On 17 June 2026, the European Parliament and the Council adopted new rules applicable to plants obtained by targeted mutagenesis and cisgenesis and their food and feed.
The new EU regulatory framework for New Genomic Techniques (NGTs) splits plant breeding into two distinct categories based on genetic equivalence to conventional crops to boost sustainability while maintaining strict safety and transparency.

Following final adoption in mid-2026 – the new rules entered into force on 16 July 2026 – a two-year transition period is underway, with full application scheduled to begin in mid-2028 (from 17 July 2028). You can track ongoing updates via the European Commission NGT Portal
