World Food Safety Day 2025: “Food safety – science in action”

This year’s World Food Safety Day theme has been officially announced: “Food safety: science in action.”
This theme highlights the crucial role of science in ensuring the accuracy and reliability of food safety guidance used by governments, businesses, and consumers worldwide.
The EU FOOD SAFETY PLATFORM is organizing a multi-actor initiative
by gathering members’ contributions to celebrate this year’s theme!

However, science alone is not enough—food safety only becomes a reality when knowledge is put into action. That is why the World Food Safety Day slogan remains:
🛡️ “Food safety is everyone’s business.”
A Global Effort for Safer Food
World Food Safety Day, jointly facilitated by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the Whttps://www.fao.org/fao-who-codexalimentarius/world-food-safety-day/wfsd-homepage/en/orld Health Organization (WHO), aims to raise awareness and encourage action to prevent foodborne risks. This year, FAO and WHO have launched a “Get Started Toolkit” in six UN languages (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, and Spanish). The toolkit provides:
✅ An introduction to the theme
✅ Key messages on food safety
✅ Ideas for celebrating the event
✅ A collection of communication materials to help spread the word
Food safety is a public health priority, saving lives and reducing the burden of foodborne illnesses. Every year:
📌 600 million people fall sick due to contaminated food
📌 420,000 deaths occur from preventable foodborne diseases
📌 The most vulnerable groups—children and low-income communities—are disproportionately affected
With supply chains spanning multiple borders, ensuring safe food for all requires a global commitment to scientific research, risk assessment, and the implementation of food safety measures at every stage of production and distribution.
Five Calls to Action
This World Food Safety Day, all stakeholders in the food supply chain are called to take action:
1️⃣ Ensure it’s safe – Governments must guarantee safe and nutritious food for all
2️⃣ Grow it safe – Farmers and food producers must adopt good agricultural practices
3️⃣ Keep it safe – Businesses must ensure safe food handling and processing
4️⃣ Know what’s safe – Consumers should stay informed about food safety risks
5️⃣ Team up for food safety – Collaboration is key to ensuring a safe food system
Food safety is a shared responsibility—from farm to table, every action counts.
Let’s celebrate World Food Safety Day 2025 by embracing science-driven solutions and working together for a safer, healthier food system for all.
